How woke are Apple TV shows
It's safe to say that searching for shows on streaming platforms is every bit the nightmare that 'too much choice kills the choice' intended to describe. Particularly, when the average quality of shows is abysmal. Netflix, Amazon prime....mostly shows depicting 'a day in the life' of vacuous, self-absorbed, non-interesting characters...We see every bit of the bad influence indie movies, that became prevalent at the turn of the century, have had over the movie making industry. Now, it's everywhere. Though Amazon's shows are better than Netflix's, who might as well make a video about actually burning real money instead of producing shows...
'Tammy decides to leave it all to move to the countryside....where she will meet unfriendly new neighbors'
You bet! I'm pretty sure, people in Texas are not too thrilled about the throngs of Californians moving in and importing with them their system value...that screwed up the place they decided to leave.
'but then will find a really nice guy and be embraced by the community'....which will then become woke, thanks to her great spirit and inspiring nature. That last part I added, but it is obvious in today's uber woke corporate culture that this is how it is intended to end. Shall we call it 'woke hedging'?
And it's awful.
Somehow, on these platforms there still remains some gems here and there but 99% is self-absorbed trash. My search for content nowadays is done by release date. Anything past 2015 is dismissed quasi instantly. I look preferably for 90's movies. Today's quality is so bad that average 90's movies now stand over them like the monolith in '2001 a space odyssey' stood over monkeys. Except, Netflix has very few of them and ever since, Amazon bought MGM studios, their catalogue has improved, except 90% of them aren't free or just for a few weeks before making the definitive change to 'never ever again free'.
About 10 years ago, I started buying blu-rays. A lot of them, to the bewilderment of my colleagues. Why spend so much money for movies when you can have access to a nearly infinite list of them for a modest monthly fee? Well it's progressively turning out that I was not crazy and definitely not wrong, dare I say correct.
First because classics are classics. Second, some really great movies, for multiple reasons sort of disappear from the collective memory and become quasi impossible to find anymore. Third, because you become dependent on the editorial choices made by streaming platforms and more often than not....these movies are not there.
To get back to our story, my wife wanted to see something nice. Don't they all? so I said, 'why not try apple tv, the shows are probably better made than Netflix's'. So I subscribed and my first thought was....Ah now I know where all the stars went to get their paycheck. You suddenly recognise faces, mostly female though. They don't seem to like men very much...or they just get bad guys roles. So I start browsing through their shows and we get the now typical excessively diverse casts to the point where shows are now from a different universe. When I look around me, that diversity doesn't exist anywhere close to what is on TV. That hypocrisy is now the new norm. At the end of the day, as long as the cast is competent, why care?
I just had to look at the first episodes of Truth be told and The morning show to realise that Apple TV had become woke central. Women are good and Men are bad, no complexity, no nuance, all done with the veneer of slick production values. On top of that, both shows and I suspect all the others are the same way seem to be filmed and edited in very similar manners, which adds to the sense of 'our lives are better' and makes the characters mostly unlikable. There has to be strict technical guidelines to follow.
Watching Truth be told, my wokometer went wild right away. For those who don't know the series. A black journalist who covers crime and happens to run a podcast (on itunes which she records wearing beats headphones) has an epiphany and admits to herself that she had been untruthful in her coverage of the trial that jumpstarted her career 20 years prior. Now submerged with the guilt of having put a 17yo white boy in jail, she, as any good SJW, wants to make it right....except the boy has turned into a neonazi... Obviously her higher morals guides her into nonetheless helping him because his mother is about to die from cancer....Who comes up with non-sensical stories like this? There is nothing remotely credible. This is woke story-making at its finest. I guess she could have been transgender, but Apple always tries to preserve that little hint of conservative veneer to appeal to a broader audience. Let's be liberal but not obnoxiously so....though this is coming close.
I have only been through one episode but I fear this is going to be a struggle. The main character has her entire family hanging out at a biker's club with old white guys in front of it (crypto neonazis too?) where they play soul music...I have never seen that before but what do I know?
The morning show in the first episode already spills the beans and tell us what this is all about. The money, money, money....Being woke, the virtue signalling is all about the advertising dollar. That's why today's period feels incredibly phony and can't be taken seriously.
Anyway, my subscription won't go beyond the 7 day free trial.
